Earlier in the week, ABC News published an article highlighting the proposed benefits of Murrumbidgee Irrigation’s $126.48 million Federal Government Grant.
Murrumbidgee Irrigation (MI) is one of the largest private irrigation companies in Australia serving over 3,093 landholdings that is owned by over 2,300 shareholder customers within an area of 378,911 hectares.
MI exists to enable regional productivity through irrigation. Their purpose is to deliver water to customers in the best way possible, and they’re achieving this through the continued modernisation of the region.
The funding will be spent on finalising automation works, reconstructing nearly 20 kilometres of open channels to reduce evaporation and seepage, and creating a 5000 megalitre ‘surge reservoir’.
“This is the last component of all the works done to make our system as efficient as possible,” said Brett Jones, CEO of MI.
“This 7.4 gigalitres of savings add to the already over 50 gigalitres of savings we’ve achieved through the previous programs, which effectively almost halved the original amount of water that was lost throughout the system.”
Murrumbidgee Irrigation is only the second project to be approved under the Australian Federal Government’s $1.3 billion Off-Farm Efficiency Program so far, with grants of up to $150 million available for irrigation networks to modernise their systems.
